A Golden Affair
A Golden Affair
She tapped her pink manicured nails roughly on the table and exhaled as she read the short note once again.
Tomorrow at our spot - 3 pm.
She sighed, loudly, and realized he had no real class. The invitation was like all of the others, brief and to the point. At least his love-making wasn’t like his notes. To be honest, it wasn’t really love-making, there wasn’t any love involved - at least not on his side. Her heart secretly ached for him; she longed to hold him every day and night. She longed to have a real relationship, but only a relationship with him. That, however, was not the game of their affair. She hadn’t known what she was getting herself into when she met him and now she couldn’t, she wouldn’t take it back. Looking back, she realized she had changed and grown up, in a way that she never could have imagined.
She had met him two years ago in the middle of a rainstorm downtown. Her long, blonde hair was drenched and sticking to her face, blocking her view as she stumbled down her friend’s front steps onto the sidewalk. She tripped over a bump and smacked right into him, Alec, as he later introduced himself. His warm, dark hands gripped her shoulders and he steadied her. She looked up, thankful, and met his deep, brown eyes and stammered a thank you. They stood in the down-pour staring at one another for several minutes, electricity flying between the two, before he flashed a charming grin and said, “Not a problem, my lady.”
Even though she was shivering from being wet, and stunned by the gorgeous man, she laughed at the absurdity of his comment, and her high bell chimed out, “What manners you have, good sir!”
He chuckled back at her, making his brown eyes dance and before she knew it, he was offering her a ride home that, instead, turned into lunch at a local cafe. Sitting and eating with him turned into hours of enriching conversation about each other, and his beautiful eyes enraptured her. They talked about where they grew up and his travels around the world, her dreams of traveling and his fear of not being able to travel enough. Before she knew it, lunch had turned into dinner and he invited her to his condominium to eat. Without thinking, her immediate answer was a yes, and she willingly hopped into his town car and went home with him.
His condo was a glorious piece of architecture that sat nestled into a beautiful corner street. The gloom of the rainy city didn’t touch the magnificence of his home. Bright stone steps led them to a majestic entryway and soon they were on the top floor of the condo. Her breath caught as he opened the door to his foyer. The room was beautifully decorated in a modern fashion, with just a touch of the old world highlighting his home. Oil paintings hung every few feet on the wall and he had two marble statues. His entire home was grand and generously decorated in expensive items that screamed of his wealth and his style. She didn’t know what she had gotten herself into.
She saw Alec smile at her stunned looks, knowing that she was not use to such money and that she hadn’t intended to find him so wealthy. “Reyna, my darling, come and sit down and I shall cook for you.”
Reyna nodded and she fussed with her frizzy blonde hair, suddenly embarrassed about her looks. She moved quietly to the island bar stool that sat in the kitchen and watched his dark, magical hands work on chopping up onions and carrots. His body moved with purpose and he looked like a dancer moving around his kitchen. His dark ringlets that surrounded his face bounced with each sharp turn that only enhanced his chiseled beauty. It was his eyes that she couldn’t pull away from, his chocolate, brown eyes were like a powerful magnet and she lost herself in his eyes every time he looked at her. While the meal was cooking he got two large wine glasses and poured them each a healthy serving of a dark red wine that was sweet to the taste.
They made idle talk about books and authors that they enjoyed. Reyna listed off many female classic literature writers like Jane Austin, the Bronte sisters and Sylvia Plath. He listed many of his favorite authors and she wasn’t surprised to find that he loved a good mystery, as he was so mysterious to her. She watched him take in her words while they ate and hoped that he was as enraptured with her as she was with him. She hardly remembered eating the delicious food that he had prepared and found that she had drunk a good deal of wine once her meal was complete. He scooped up the dishes and guided her to another room. She found herself nestled into a plush, leather chair in his office that looked more like the library from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast than an office.
The wine was going to her head and she knew she was a bit tipsy. Reyna could feel the flush in her cheeks and her nerves crept upon her once again. She fiddled with her messy hair, wishing she had grabbed a ponytail holder before she had left that morning. Alec came in with a slight smile on his beautiful, full lips, with a steaming cup of tea. After he gently placed the tea on the end table next to her chair his warm, soft hands touched hers.
“My darling, you look like a Golden Goddess, there is no reason to fret over your hair. Please feel comfortable in my home and relax.”
She had hardly heard his words as her heart was stammering in her chest and as his soft hands, smooth like silk, caressed hers and she found herself wanting to float into his arms. She knew that with as tipsy as she was that she might do just that. Her heart played out a romantic fantasy that ended with happily ever after; however, she knew in the part of her mind that she tried to hush, that her time with him needed to come to an end. Reality was hitting home, a man like this, wealthy, successful, charming and, no doubt, powerful - could not want a young, naive girl like her. Her fantasy with him could only end in heartache for her and fear pulled at her mind.
“Alec,” she breathed his name. “I cannot thank you enough for today. I have had the most amazing time any girl could hope for, bu-“
His warm finger pressed against her lips to stop her words, “Do not say that you must leave. I met you today and have felt as if a part of me has known you my entire life.” He paused and her heart was melting under his golden tongue. As he continued she felt herself leaning closer with each word, “Stay, stay for a little while longer at least. Enjoy the tea and let yourself settle from dinner and the wine.”
Reyna was close to his face, close enough, that all she had to do was lean forward - just a bit more - and their lips would touch, but his words about the wine brought a darker blush to her face. She leaned back embarrassed, smiling apologetically and thought she saw the briefest flash of disappointment flash across his face; however, it was gone before she could double check. She sipped her tea and listened to his deep voice go on about his travels. He had been to nearly every continent and countless countries. She envied his adventurous ways and wished that she could step out of her shell and venture into the unknown as he had.
He never mentioned his age, though she knew with how worldly he was that he had to be at least five years older than her. If he hadn’t been so accomplished she could easily see himself as her age. He had been to many places throughout the world and she was envious of how cultured and successful he was. He asked her about her career and travels and she grew bashful, but didn’t hold back. She was 22 and had moved to Seattle to work in her step-father’s publishing firm from Chicago. She was still a lackey, as she didn’t want to start her career off of her step-father’s reputation. She lived downtown and spent a lot of her spare time reading and writing, too bashful to try and publish her own words. She feared that she couldn’t keep her readers interested in her fictitious romantic-dramas. Her ultimate goal was to become a novelist, writing as much as she possibly could.
Long after her tea was gone she heard his clock chiming at the midnight hour and she realized that she was tired. She struggled to hide her yawn as she fought to subconsciously find a way to stay. He stood, offering his hand to her, and she accepted it as he lightly pulled her to her feet. Alec’s brown eyes met her bright blue ones and she could feel the force of what felt like a magnet pulling them together again. While her body and heart yelled at her to lean in and kiss him, her brain told her that this powerful man wasn’t one that she could obtain. Even if she could have him for a little while, he would have to pull away and leave her. While every ounce of her was screaming that this was her true soul mate, she forced herself to stay at arm’s length to save herself the heartache that would come.
Reyna smiled a polite, apologetic smile at him and again she saw the flash of disappointment in his eyes before he smiled his charming smile. She sensed he knew that she was holding back and they reluctantly released hands. After his arm dropped her delicate fingers tingled from the warmth that his had left on hers and she yearned to reach out and hold his dark hand once more.
“Well Alec,” Reyna began, not knowing what to say, or if she would ever see this amazing man again. Before she could continue he spoke up.
His words were a mere whisper, full of longing that she couldn’t fully understand, “Reyna…” A hunger that she had never seen before flashed across his magnetically mysterious eyes and she could feel herself being drawn in once again. Cursing herself, she through away her guards and she allowed her body to slowly lean towards him and she began to close her eyes, expecting his full lips to pull her into an embrace. This time, however, it wasn’t her who pulled back, but him. It was as if a switch had gone on and he had pulled away, the magnet suddenly discharged, before she had gotten pulled into him. His sudden change made her breath catch in her throat. He took the smallest step back and showed no emotion on his face. She knew that she had been right; this gorgeous man was no more than a heartbreaker. Pulling away was his way of saving her from a disaster that she wouldn’t be able to recover from.
“Reyna,” he said with a clear voice, “let my driver and I take you home.”
Stunned, and afraid she had done something wrong, all she could do was nod. He helped her gather her small purse and they stepped into the elevator like mere acquaintances. She knew the long drive to her shabby apartment downtown would take a while and dreaded the silence they would face. When they entered the back seat of the town car she feared she had been right. They spent the first ten minutes in silence. The silence was a heavy burden on her shoulders and she fiddled with her curly, frizzy mess of hair - not looking his way. She knew what he had meant when he said before that it felt like he had known her forever, because she felt the same. It was as if they met and her soul knew his. Her body would fit perfectly against his and she knew that they would have more in common than they had already discovered. They would have to part ways and sever the pull of the magnet that was pushing them together. For a heart-aching moment she feared that she may burst into tears. Her mind told her that tears for a man she hardly knew were ridiculous and she forced her body to agree. Her hands never left the nervous fiddling with her hair and she tried not to sigh out loud, afraid of what he would, or perhaps, wouldn’t say.
After her internal monologue seemed to die down she heard Alec sigh heavily and chanced a heavy-lidded glance in his direction. He sat starring at her hand that was playing in her hair; she swore she could almost see a longing in his eyes again. She quickly glanced away, unsure of what to do; however, his hand once again met hers and pulled it out of her hair. She looked at him and saw a sad smile on his face.
“I told you, you look like a Golden Goddess, your hair is the most beautiful hair I have ever seen.” He spoke the words in a sweet, soft voice and his hand still lightly held hers on the seat.
Reyna stumbled over her words, suddenly shy again, “Why, th-thank you.” She struggled to bring the conversation forward again so that they wouldn’t sit in silence, but nothing came to her. Her heart beat faster as she realized that he hadn’t let go of her hand and she shyly slid her palm into his hand, to fit better into his.
“Reyna, I must ask you to trust me.” His words sat heavily in the air between them.
Her heart was beating so fast that she thought he would be able to hear it thundering in her chest. Was this the moment she had been waiting for? Was she finally going to be able to kiss his sweet, dark lips? She hesitantly inched her body closer - just barely, before nodding her consent for him to continue.
Before he could speak his driver rolled down the partition and told them that they had arrived. Alec nodded and released her hand to climb out of the car. She shook herself mentally and tried to hide the disappointed blush creeping up her cheeks. She told herself that was the last time she would get hopeful about kissing the beautiful God that he was. She stepped out and dug for her keys in her purse, unable to bring herself to completely look at him. Steeling herself against his beauty and magnetic qualities, she thanked him.
“Alec, again, I cannot thank you for today and tonight. This has been the most amazing day. Thank you for making sure I arrived safely home.” She was careful not to let her eyes fall into his, instead, she made sure to stare at the bridge of his nose and smiled a sweet smile. She turned and walked to the outer door to unlock her apartment door and dared herself not to look back, no matter what he said.
She heard his footsteps behind her and was surprised to find his warm hands gently turning her shoulders to face him. As he turned her around with a gentle caress she found herself merely inches from him. He sighed, a small noise escaping between them and she felt his smooth hands inch forward and lightly turned her face up to him, making her wide, blue eyes meet his smoldering brown ones. Again she couldn’t control the beating of her heart, unaware of what this beautiful God of a man would do and not wanting to prevent him.
“Reyna,” with the whisper of her name she almost folded against his warmth. “Trust me when I say you don’t want this. Trust me when I tell you this is not something you need in your life. I am not worthy of you. I know that I can’t give you what you truly deserve.”
Taken aback, she almost pulled away, but the sorrow in his eyes held her glued to him. All she wanted to do was push his curly, dark hair behind his ear and press herself against him. She found herself boldly replying to his confession, “You can tell me to trust you all you want, but I think that I am capable of deciding what I want all on my own - good sir.” She added the last bit, trying to perk him up. It had the desired effect and he slowly licked his lips as he looked at her. She felt the magnetic pull bring her closer to him and she let her body willingly press against his warm, solid form.
He let out a half sigh, half moan and spoke again, “I am not the man you think I -“
Before he could finish and before she could think of losing her nerve; before she could let her brain talk herself out of it, she pushed her small, pink lips into his dark ones and found a rush of passion spring loose between the two of them. She felt her body mold into him, her arms curling around his neck and his arms wrapped around her, protectively, lovingly. Each kiss only inflamed a more lascivious one and she felt herself moan against him and him against her. He slowly backed her up against the outside of her apartment door and all she wanted was him. From that moment on she knew that she would love this exotic, wild and completely unobtainable man.
Time might have passed in minutes or hours, she was so absorbed in the fervor of their kiss that shed didn’t care. All she wanted was for him to continue, but he finally broke apart their kiss. He pressed his smooth forehead against hers and they panted, trying to get their breath back. She still found her arms wrapped around him and his around her and Reyna was in heaven. Too soon, he pulled away and brought her hand to his lips.
Lightly he placed a kiss on her hand and whispered, “Until we meet again, my lady, but for tonight, I must depart.”
His words stung her and before she could respond or process what was happening he was closing the door to his car and was driven off by his driver. She stood there, dumbfounded, for several more minutes before she realized he wouldn’t come back. Confused, lonely and curious she unlocked the bottom door and climbed the four stories to her apartment.
She entered the shabby living room and was glad that she hadn’t had the courage to invite him up. She couldn’t imagine the look on his face if he saw her surroundings. She wondered if he had ever known what it was like struggle financially. She set her keys in the dish by the door, kicked off her flip flops and hung her purse up. Reyna was too awake to be able to sleep so she drew herself a hot bath and took a big glass of red wine with her to think about what had happened.
He said that he would see her again, hadn’t he? “Until we meet again,” those were his words, so did that mean he would see her again? He didn’t even ask for her number. What kind of man kisses a girl like that and doesn’t ask for her number? Reyna wasn’t overly familiar with the dating world. She spent her entire life submerged in books, had been studious at school and had cared less about trying to impress boys. Not that she was completely inexperienced; she had had a short interlude with a boy in college. She had lost her virginity and her heart to a man who wanted nothing more than a piece of ass. At the time it had crushed her, but she learned a valuable lesson in heartache and sex. She wasn’t gorgeous by any means, nor was she model skinny, but she would consider herself cute. Reyna didn’t consider herself fat, but looking at her body she knew that she was an average woman. Her butt was rounded and, as her mother said her, “hips were meant for childbearing.” All of those reasons added up to more items to mark on her Alec wouldn’t want a woman like me list. Young, naïve, inexperienced women weren’t meant to keep ahold of the most powerful man she had ever encountered.
She knew that her body wanted him in more ways than she could imagine. Reyna didn’t know what she was feeling or why she couldn’t shake him. She could still feel his soft, dark hands caressing her, pulling her protectively into him. His warm lips pressed into hers, she could still feel the passionate fire that had erupted from her. What was this gorgeous man doing to her? She knew she needed to push him from her mind, she had things that she wanted to accomplish and getting her heart broken wasn’t one of them.
Confused more than ever after her bath, she dried off, wrapped herself in her comfortable pajamas and decided to crawl into her empty bed. She laid awake in bed for a few more hours before finally falling into a fitful sleep. She awoke six hours later to someone harassing her buzzer and she stumbled to her door to let the annoying jerk in. Within a few minutes the person heavily pounded on her door and she cautiously peered out of the peep-hole. She saw gorgeous orchids sitting in the delivery man’s hands and couldn’t help the grin that sprang to her face. She pulled open the door and the pimply faced man shoved a clipboard into her hands. She signed quickly, took the flowers, and thanked the man.
There were two dozen white orchids in the vase and she rushed it to her rugged kitchen table and opened the card that read:
To my Golden Goddess: I shall call upon you tomorrow night.
He didn’t sign a signature, but her heart melted at the words ‘Golden Goddess’ and she couldn’t wait to see him again…..
